SST Student Day Information
Aims "The future belongs to the young. Today's students are tomorrow's leaders in the field." "We stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before us. All we create, builds on what has gone before." The SST Student Day seeks to integrate these two truths by providing a forum for student researchers to meet and present their work in a friendly, nurturing environment. Senior, experienced mentors will also present their personal vision and motivations, together with providing constructive feedback for all student presenters. Informal debate and query sessions will provide an opportunity for the sharing of expectations, knowledge, and experience. Though final details are currently being negotiated, it is expected that several mentors will attend the Student Day. These mentors are being selected with an eye towards experience, coverage of speech science and speech technology, and willingness to provide useful, informal feedback. Within the next several weeks the final list of mentors will be posted on this page. Venue and Time of Event The SST Student day will take place on Monday 30 November (immediately prior to the main conference) at the Sydney Convention Centre. It is expected that the day will start at 9am and conclude by 5pm (more details once number of papers is known). Paper Submission and Publication Format Student researchers are invited to submit papers for presentation at the Student Day (as an alternative to submission for the main conference). In those cases in which students wish to submit to both the Student Day and the main conference, said papers should be substantively different. Submission guidelines and deadlines, however, conform to those of the main conference (see the main Call for Papers). Submitted papers will be reviewed with an eye towards encouraging involvement, and those accepted will be published both on the CDROM of conference proceedings, and in separate proceedings of a format similar to those used in previous SST conferences. Poster sessions will be employed for the presentation of all Student Day papers. During these sessions the mentors will circulate and provide personal feedback to each student presenter. An SST98 Student Paper Award will be presented to the student whose paper is judged of the highest quality and promise by the panel of mentors. Program Structure and Schedule of Presentation After a brief welcoming speech, the day will comprise of a number of alternating poster sessions, interspersed with oral presentations by the invited mentors. More specific details concerning number of sessions and presentations will be made available on this page once the submission deadline has passed. The day will conclude with the Award presentation, followed by an open and informal debate in which all student attendees and mentors are welcome and encouraged to participate. Details of the debate topic area(s) are not finalised, and we welcome your suggestions as to suitable hot topics. Further Information This web page will be updated periodically as further details are known.
