ICSLP98 POSTER PRESENTATIONS

There will be a number of Poster Presentation Areas at ICSLP'98 in the Sydney Convention Centre. Details of the provisional time and place of your poster will be provided on the ICSLP'98 web page at http://cslab.anu.edu.au/icslp98/ via the "Provisional Programme" link, after the camera ready papers have been submitted and presenting authors have registered.

To ensure that your presentation runs smoothly, please take the time to read the following notes.

Poster Boards

Posters should be no larger than 2m wide x 1m high. Drawing pins (thumb tacks) will be available at the registration desk for affixing your poster to the board. If you do not wish your poster to be punctured, Velcro will be available for affixing posters. If you wish to affix your poster by any other means, please bring the appropriate materials.

Posters should be erected well before the beginning of your poster session. This will normally be before the morning paper session for posters rostered in the mornings, and during the lunch break for posters scheduled for afternoon sessions.

Your poster should be easily readable at a distance of 2 metres. Use lower and upper case text; do not use capital letters exclusively as this can make your text difficult to read. Avoid using mixtures of type styles, since this can be distracting. To ensure visibility, we suggest the following minimum heights for characters:

Title text: 25 mm

Heading text: 15 mm

Body text: 6-8 mm

The message that your poster delivers should be clear and understandable without oral explanation. At the top of the poster include the title, the name(s) of the author(s), and their institution(s). The text should be succinct and to-the-point throughout. Remember that poster viewers first want to quickly find out if the topic is of interest to them; and then, if it is, to extract information from the poster relatively easily. Try to make any description of methods simple and concise. If there are intricacies that will not translate too well to the poster board, remember that you will be able to elaborate upon these orally to interested parties. Results should be presented graphically if possible. Do not forget to include figure legends, and make these short but informative. Use pictures, symbols and colour to help present your message. A matt finish on photographs reduces glare and gives better visibility.

To elaborate on details of your presentation, you should consider providing handouts that contain either a summary or more detail. Another way to provide more information is via a mini-lecture: some presenters like to advertise when, during the allotted time for the poster, these brief lectures will occur. Others simply present a brief lecture once a critical mass of interested viewers have congregated.

A registered author must be with each poster during the designated time period to discuss the work. Provisional designated times will be announced on the Web site along with other programming details of your presentation at the end of August.
